Local Authority Registration for Food Businesses
Registration
All food businesses must register their business with their local authority and comply with the appropriate legislation.
Registration is free and means you will be subject to routine inspections to help you meet the legal requirements applicable to your business.
Contacts to help with this can be found on 0300 300 8000. Ask to speak to a Food Safety Officer.
Food Hygiene Training
Food hygiene training is a legal requirement for a food business which must also be refreshed as appropriate and necessary. One way of complying with this requirement is to undertake the Level II course which covers the basics necessary. If you manage or supervise staff it may be necessary to obtain a higher qualification.
Safe systems
Since 2006 there has been a requirement to document the safe systems that any food business must have in place. Safe systems are simply the things you do or put in place to make sure no one will get ill after eating your food and these safe systems should be simply documented.
If you operate a food business there are certain things that you have to do to comply with the law and to help ensure that no one becomes ill from eating your food. From food hygiene training appropriate to your activities, to keeping the premises clean and providing hand wash facilities- all these things will have a place in helping to ensure that you operate safely and within the law.
For more information contact 0300 300 8000 and ask to speak to a Food Safety Officer.
Approval
If you run or intend to start up a food business which handles food of animal origin and you supply/sell to another food business, you may need to be approved rather than be registered. Contacts to help with this can be found on 0300 300 8000. Ask to speak to a Food Safety Officer.
